When the Unseen Affects the Living: A Story of Spirit Release and Healing

People occasionally ask whether I believe in ghosts, whether there is such a thing as spirit release, and what that is like.

In my personal experience, and after decades of working with clients, I’ve encountered enough unusual experiences that I no longer question the possibility that there are aspects of reality we don’t fully understand.

As a child, my mother would tuck me into bed and tell me stories about guardian angels watching over me while I slept. I found those stories comforting and often fell asleep wondering if I might catch a glimpse of one. Later, as a teenager, I had several adventures that should have ended far worse than they did. Somehow, I always seemed to emerge unharmed. Those experiences strengthened my belief that there is more to life than what we can see with our physical eyes.

Over the years, that curiosity led me to the study of spirituality, hypnosis, past life regression, and consciousness itself. Along the way, I occasionally encountered experiences that challenged my understanding of reality.

One of the most memorable involved a client who believed there was something profoundly wrong with her home. She came to me requesting a spirit release.

A House Filled with Unexplained Experiences

My client called on me because she was frightened and exhausted.

Since moving into her house, she had experienced a growing list of unsettling problems. Her health had declined. She often felt as though someone was watching her. She heard voices when no one was present. Most disturbing of all, she felt the presence of a man who seemed to linger nearby, smoking cigarettes and occasionally pressing against her back.

She described feeling trapped inside the house, as though an invisible force prevented her from leaving. Yet whenever she managed to get a block away, she felt immediate relief.

Her husband had begun experiencing similar symptoms.

Naturally, they looked for practical explanations. They hired inspectors to search for mold or environmental problems. Nothing was found.

Contractors who visited the property seemed strangely reluctant to return. Something about the house felt wrong.

Then they learned that a previous homeowner had died by suicide there many years earlier.

The story was tragic, and while the details of the story made me curious about the need for a spirit release, I wasn’t interested in jumping to conclusions. Instead, I guided my client into hypnosis so we could explore what her subconscious mind knew about the situation.

Meeting the Woman at the Top of the Stairs

As my client entered a relaxed trance, I asked her to imagine herself standing outside the house.

She slowly walked through the front door.

Almost immediately, she sensed resistance.

As she looked upstairs, she saw a woman sitting quietly at the top of the staircase. The woman appeared deeply distressed. As the scene unfolded, my client recognized her as the previous homeowner. My suspicions of the need for spirit release were being confirmed. But no need to rush. It’s better to explore more about the spirit and the situation.

What struck my client most about her was not fear or hostility. It was overwhelming guilt.

The woman seemed trapped in the emotional consequences of her final decision. Rather than moving forward, she had remained attached to the house and to the pain she carried.

As my client communicated with her, it became apparent that she was punishing herself. She believed she deserved to suffer.

Instead of forcing her to leave, we approached her with compassion. We discussed the possibility that continuing to suffer was helping no one—not her children, not the home’s current occupants, and certainly not herself.

For the first time, she considered the possibility of releasing her guilt.

To our surprise, she agreed.

As she did, my client watched her move away from the house and toward a brighter place. She witnessed the spirit release herself from the house.

The Man Who Couldn’t Leave

Next, we turned our attention to the cigarette-smoking man.

My client immediately recognized him. He was the original owner of the house, an engineer who had built it decades earlier.

Unlike the woman, he wasn’t burdened by guilt. He was attached to the house itself. He was proud of what he had created and disliked seeing changes made to it. Every renovation felt like a personal insult.

When asked why he remained, his answer was simple. “This is my house.”

There was no reason to impose a spirit release. There are gentler ways to achieve our goal. As our conversation continued, we explored a different possibility.

What if other projects were waiting for him?

What if he could continue learning, creating, and contributing elsewhere?

What if his work here was complete?

Eventually, he smiled. The idea appealed to him. He agreed to move on. With his agreement, the spirit release was accomplished.

The Energy Beneath the House

At that point, my client reported feeling much lighter. However, one issue remained.

Throughout her time in the house, she had sensed a swirling energy in its center. She often described it as a whirlpool or vortex.

As we explored further, she found herself transported to a time long before the neighborhood existed. The house was gone. The streets were gone. The entire landscape looked different.

There, she encountered a Native American spirit who explained that a powerful energetic vortex existed beneath the property. The area had once been considered sacred and treated with great respect.

According to his understanding, building a house directly over that location had created an ongoing disturbance.

Whether this experience represented a literal event, symbolic imagery from her subconscious, or something else entirely, it provided a meaningful solution. Yet, it was clear that this would not be a cause for spirit release.

Instead, together, they imagined placing a cover over the vortex and redirecting its energy so it would no longer affect the home.

Immediately, the sensation changed. The house felt calm, balanced, and peaceful.

No need for a spirit release as another solution proved more successful.

What Really Happened?

People often ask me whether experiences like spirit release are real.

My answer may surprise you. I am less interested in proving what happened than I am in understanding the results.

Whether these encounters were literal spirits, energetic imprints, symbolic expressions of the subconscious mind, or some combination of all three, the outcome was undeniable.

My client felt immediate relief. The oppressive atmosphere disappeared. The fear subsided. The home felt livable again. This was our goal and we accomplished it. Whether it was due to a spirit release or not, we achieved success.

Sometimes the most important question is not whether an experience fits neatly into our existing understanding of reality.

Sometimes the question is:

“What is this experience trying to teach us?”

A Final Thought

Over the years, I have come to believe that many things remain stuck because of attachment, whether physical, psychological, emotional, or spiritual. People, families, relationships can all create attachments. And, on occasion, spirits do as well.

These attachments can be created out of love, such as the builder of the house, or out of guilt, grief, fear, regret, or unfinished business.

These are powerful forces. Because so many clients have come to me for help with spirit release, I have developed many approaches and learned so much about the spirit world. While this story may make it seem simple, spirit release must be approached with knowledge and caution.

Healing often begins when we find the courage to release what no longer belongs to us and allow ourselves to move forward.

Whether we are speaking of the living or the dead, the lesson may be the same.

There comes a time when holding on creates more suffering than letting go.

And sometimes the greatest act of compassion is helping someone find their way home or helping a spirit release from its attachment.
