Do you find that you give away your power to others? Does it slip away gradually and unnoticed, or have you handed over your power to another out of fear, in the name of love, or to simply resolve an uncomfortable situation quickly?

In this post, we’ll explore personal power and ways you can maintain and enhance yours.

What Is Personal Power?

Personal power is a term we use to label a bundle of characteristics we possess that, together, allows us to get our way, accomplish our goals, make progress, and gain and maintain our values. That bundle of characteristics is made up of energy, boundaries, courage, conviction, desire, and self-love, to name a few.

Exercising your personal power is important for a number of reasons. The most important one is so that you can focus on your purpose and stay steadily on your path.

Do you sometimes feel as if your personal power is slipping away from you? You are not alone. Most of us have experienced this in some way or another.

Sometimes it’s given away with a positive intention, for instance when trying to keep peace in the workplace or keep everyone happy at home. We give our power away when we try to appease or please, when we are too concerned about the opinions of others, or put everyone else’s happiness ahead of our own goals.

Sometimes our personal power is snatched away from us in an intimidating way, such as by persecution, war, bullying, abuse, and the like.

As examples, it may show up in our lives when we

  • set aside our goals and desires to follow someone else on their path or because we fear criticism
  • don’t make time for ourselves but are doing way too much for others
  • feel we can’t speak our mind or give our opinion
  • care more about getting approval from others than following our own judgments and goals
  • feel invisible, unheard, unappreciated
  • act out of fear of retaliation or loss rather than from choices made to support our own values
  • Are in the habit of turning over decisions and choices to someone else.

Diminished personal power may have its roots in experiences from this life or may have been carried over from a past life. Giving away your power initially could stem from the need for survival, to win or keep someone’s love, or as a way to fit into society. Over time, the result is pent-up anger, resentment, frustration, diminished self-esteem, and a block to achieving your passions or your purpose.

Some people conceive of having personal power as pushing other people around or demanding others do your bidding. That is is force, and not the same as personal power. Personal power means you control your life and your destiny, not control or restrict others.

Wielding your personal power in a healthy manner means that you can have a presence, manifest your goals, maintain boundaries, stand up for yourself, affect the change you wish to see in the world, and have the energy to create a life filled with achievement, joy, and well-being.

Steps to Regaining Your Personal Power

Regaining your lost or diminished personal power is a process. It begins with understanding your internal perspectives and weaknesses that have played a part in this pattern of giving it away or losing it. We will explore past events when this has occurred, whether in this life or in past lives, to identify the common trait that has allowed it. Every individual will have a unique set of circumstances and thought patterns that have contributed to this condition.

Once discovered, we can begin to make corrections, first in the thought processes and then in correcting behaviors and responses.

Within the session, the needed corrections will become obvious. Then, they are anchored and set into motion, and all that is left is to test them in everyday life. It may take getting familiar with a new way of being in the world, a way that is empowered, with courage and conviction, boundaries and self-worth. And then it will feel natural to live with the new pattern of personal power.

One of the most valuable parts of the strategy of building and maintaining personal power is to gather and fully integrate the memories of as many lifetimes as possible. This means that you not only know about those other lifetimes or have a sense of who you have been, but to fully and seamlessly be one with those other incarnations. Rather than seeing your lifetimes as separate personalities and adventures, you see yourself as the focal point and embodiment of all your lifetimes. In this way, you gather all the energy, wisdom, lessons learned, skills, knowledge, and perspectives of relationships into your present consciousness. It creates a strong energy field and a solid sense of self.

As you regain your personal power, you:

  • make your decisions based on how they will affect you in all of your aspects (lifetimes)
  • can access the memories, wisdom, and knowledge that you have acquired even in those far away times
  • are able to recognize people you knew in other lifetimes, remember your relationships with them, and see their lives as one long continuum as well.
  • are energetically linked to all your aspects to make one larger, more powerful Being in yourself today.

When this has occurred, you are less likely to be pushed around by the prevailing winds, and less likely to lose or give away your personal power. You will be more grounded, self-assured, wise, and empowered to create the life you truly imagine for yourself.

Ending Thoughts

There are many ways that personal power is given or taken away. When this occurs, there is a loss of autonomy and self-direction. This leads to anger, frustration, resentment, and the inability to maintain your true life path.

If you find that you have given away some or all of your personal power, or if you feel that you are feeling the results of past traumas that have diminished your full empowerment, it is never too late to recover that energy and state of Being.
